Biography
Versatile and accomplished in both comedy and drama for the operatic stage,
baritone Brian B. Carter was this past year named first prize winner at the New
Jersey Association for Verismo Opera Competition for 2012, and will be starring
in the company's production of
Gianni Schicchi.  He has also recently been heard
as the father Giorgio Germont in Opera Delaware’s production of
La traviata,
where he has sung Figaro (
Il barbiere di Siviglia).  Other recent productions
include the title role in
Rigoletto with Sarasota Opera, Pasquale (The Most Happy
Fella
) with Dicapo Opera, Sam (Trouble in Tahiti) with Greensboro Opera, and
the title role of
Macbeth with Opera in the Heights of Houston, Texas.  Other
roles for Carter include the title role in
Gianni Schicchi with Opera Illinois, Ping
(
Turandot) with Opera North, Miller (Luisa Miller) with Opera in the Heights,
Prince Yamadori (
Madama Butterfly) with Austin Lyric Opera, and Conte d’
Almaviva (
Le nozze di Figaro) with Living Opera of Dallas, Texas.  A native of
the San Francisco Bay Area, Carter has also been a Principal Artist-in-Residence
with Opera San José where he performed many roles including Tonio
(
Pagliacci), Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), Schaunard (La bohème), George
(
Of Mice and Men), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), Il
Poeta (
Il turco in Italia), Masetto (Don Giovanni), El Dancaïro (Carmen),
Mercutio (
Romèo et Juliette), Elviro (Xerxes), and Damis (Tartuffe).  

Though the majority of Brian Carter's performing has been on the operatic stage,
he is equally at home in the concert hall. In addition to a number of recitals, he
has been the baritone soloist for many concert works including the Fauré and
Duruflé Requiems, Rossini’s
Stabat Mater, Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden
Gesellen
, Dubois’s Seven Last Words of Christ, the Bach Magnificat, and
Vaughan Williams’s
Dona Nobis Pacem and Five Mystical Songs.  This season
he is looking forward to adding Mendelssohn's
Elijah, and Beethoven's
Symphony No. 9 to his concert repertoire.

On top of a busy performance schedule, Dr. Brian Carter teaches as an adjunct
faculty member and Artist-in-Residence at Temple University, at the University
of Pennsylvania through the Blutt College House Music Program, as well as at
the Sanford School in Hockessin, Delaware.  He has students that have sung
roles for Opera Delaware, Penn Singers, Penn Players, the Mask and Wig Club,
and have gone on to be accepted in schools such as the Berklee School of
Music.  He has presented his doctoral thesis at the Fourth International
Conference on the Physiology and Acoustics of Singing in San Antonio, Texas,
been a judge at the Delaware Music Educators Solo and Ensemble Festival.  He
has given masterclasses in Philadelphia, PA, Greensboro, NC, and Palo Alto, CA.

Dr. Carter received both his Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) and Masters
degrees at the University of Texas at Austin under the supervision of Prof. David
Small.  He earned his Bachelor of Music degree at San José State University
where he studied with Dr. David Rohrbaugh.  He has performed as a Principal
Artist-in-Residence at Opera San José (Irene Dalis, General Director), Apprentice
Artist at Des Moines Metro Opera (Dr. Robert Larsen, Artistic Director), and
Studio Artist at Sarasota Opera (Mo. Victor DeRenzi, Artistic Director).  Other
important teachers and coaches include William Parker, Daniel Helfgot, Barbara
Day Turner, Elden Little, David Neely, Lisa Hasson, Richard Cordova, Jennifer
Peterson, Jeffrey Miller and Lisa Harer de Calvo.  Currently, he studies with Ms.
Lois Alba of Houston, Texas.
